Gave the family a break from my obsession of practicing OCF and ran across this old building.

Excellent shot. Really like it.

This was my first ever attempt at this. I would love to go back next week and try this again using a different method. This was taken handheld and the auto HDR mode jpeg in the 6D. Edited on a phone using Snapseed.
Ideally, I would want to to take my own shots(raw) and combine them, right?

Ideally, you'd just use one exposure, imho.

Here is the building and a light pole right in the way.
I would like to try HDR the right way at some point. I'm new to photography and there is so much I want to try. There is also a waterfall right behind this and would love to try a long exposure. I'm all over the place lol.. but I love photography.
That long exposure is gonna need a 10 stop ND, right? I think I have a 6 stop.

This was down the road from the place. I think I need to back off the saturation, right? I'm thick skined and come here for help. I know no one that does photography so Im left with fourms and YouTube. And I want to learn so badly.. HDR, long exposure.. everything.

I appreciate your honesty. I think being new to this, I tend to over due and use a heavy hand when it comes to processing.

My first reply in a long while would be 4 rules of thumb or your index finger before touching the button:
one- composition
two- ISO
three-shutter speed
four-f stop.
You only need the four above before you start exploring all things available, primarily, practice, practice, practice, is the sure way to go naturally.
You might find this is the best way to avoid headaches trying to use the gadgets.

Don't ever forget that your photography is all about you, as the artist, and whether you like the image, or not. WM.44's message is right on, particularly the part about "practice". The more you practice, the more you will learn what works and what doesn't. In your second shot, the "saturation" is too much and doesn't work, as you figured out. Regardless of what others say, or think, don't ever be afraid to try something "new" to see what it does for you and your images. If you think that HDR is the way to go, then try it - it may, or may not, work out the way you had hoped. Most of us, in fact, I would guess that it is "all of us", have been where you are today and we got better by practice and experimentation, and asking for feedback from others.

I don't know where you live, but if you are anywhere near a major centre, the chances are there might be a technical college or a university that might offer courses in photographing various subjects. Alternatively, find something you want to learn on the web and go for it. There are a plethora of courses, long and short available to anyone who wants to go and learn. As well, there are books and videos available on just about any aspect of photography you would care to name.

Keep on posting.

This is not meant to be mean or discouraging in any way: you should learn how to focus and take pictures without blur first...
