I'm sure most of you know me for me birds. I was trying to find an owl in a tree this morning and almost got run over by 3 deer playing in the woods. This one stopped about 20 feet away and stared at me. The amazing thing is I had no light and this is shot at 1/30th handheld at 500mm. As you know my lens has no stabilization.... It look pretty impressive at a bigger size if you want to click through to flickr..

Impressive, this is quite sharp. Kind of wish there was more of the deer's face/ears.

Pretty cool. Yeah, looks like you were pretty steady for 1/30 with a 500mm setting.

At 20 feet and no light, I was shooting at F8 (set for an owl) which only allows about 2" DOF. I have my lens wrapped in Camo so I can only shoot at 500mm. This one was all about the eyes...

^You are very right about that! I'm damn impressed considering the limitations you were dealing with!

CC, I agree with those who have said this is a great shot considering the limitations you had. Myabe you have found a new calling? ;)

1/30sec! Darn I've had 1/100shots blurred to unusable levels from just subject motion! Holding a 500mm that still is impressive, but more so is capturing that split second moment of utter calm! Normally wind or light animal motions would have blurred the shot noticeably at that speed. A really cracking shot!

I think that shot will win you the "cool hands luke" award.
