Sometimes, when the spotted mountains scratch the storm clouds seeking snow, rain will slick the flat, dry lakes, leaving muddy and calico-colored reflections.

You mean to say the expanse of water that we see here really only is a couple of centimetres (call it inches, if that helps you more) deep, while it looks (in this photo) as if it were a deep lake?
The clouds both in the sky as well as their reflections in the water are lovely, and so are the spotted moutains.

I love the specks of ... guess what?

Maybe five centimeters toward the middle...

(We haven't got much snow here either, photo is from 2005)
