Son Playing

I just got my new D3100 about a month ago and I'm starting to get the hang of getting keeper images. I took this while just messing around with the camera and some light coming in the sliding glass door. I know the background is busy (just a snapshot) but I would like to know what other people think as far as focus, DOF, and post processing. I personally think it looks ok but I think it would be better if is other eye wasn't covered up.

I personally find the shallow depth on the plane distracting and his hand looks like a claw. The obstructive view of his face is also awkward. I also would not have suspected that this image was PP at all. What did you do and in what program? He is a super cute boy and your intended focus looks good. I would suggest however that you take him outdoors, in some nice shade or on an overcast day and practice! I'm sure you can get some great shots of him.

To me, it looks like the focus is sharpest on the toy, and not on him. I believe most people will tell you to get focus on the eye closest to the camera. He is cute, and I love his Buzz Lightyear pajamas!

IMO, way too much everything else and too little son's face.
IMO, way too right everything else and too dark son's face.

All you need to show is a hint of the toy to make the point.
At this size, I think it is clear that having both of his eyes in view would have been better.

Yeah I noticed his hand was a little funny looking. I adjusted some sharpness, contrast and WB in Lightroom, I think (can't remember exactly). Part of the problem with taking this pic was that he was coming at me with the plane. Thanks for the pointers.

Probably won't make it outside anytime soon. Supposed to be 3 deg F on Sunday and -6 deg F on Monday...

I agree with Lew but I acknowledge that kids can be a absolute bear to shoot. The only other thing I'd say is that I'd have cloned out the spot under his lip. Dirt on a child's face is natural and can add to the appeal, but a spot? I doubt if you would like a photo of yourself that featured a zit!

Keep at it, LOADS of practice (yes, :lmao: that IS how we spell it in the UK! We have two versions and I acknowledge that it's crazy) with that new camera! :thumbsup:
