I think I am 100% satisfied with my lighting. I had problems with my lighting being too "flat" and some were saying too contrasty. What do you think of the lighting in this image? This is sooc so I haven't done any edits yet... i just want to know what you all think

Lighting looks good. Maybe would have brought the main light up just a bit higher.

For the other aspects, I would have framed it a bit looser and had her shoulders turned at a bit of an angle.

As far as processing, I think about the only thing I would do is some selective sharpening.

Nice shot.

Thanks! Two year olds do not stay still! lol. I wish I got this shot looser but I get what I can. Toddlers are HARD. I agree next time ill put the light a little higher for some nice hair highlights too

I think the lighting looks good but I'm far from an expert in lighting. I'm not digging the background color at all though. It looks like little Miss Thanksgiving wandered into the Easter set.

Ever since someone told me the reason people use umbrellas is so there isn't odd looking squares in your eyes it has started to bug me, other than that and not really diggin the purple background myself it looks great to me. Any of them with both elbows in tact? That age is the hardest because they have like a natural 3-8inch sway, I'm assuming a lot of people take a lot larger picture and always crop instead of trying to get it right in the camera.

Weird. A lot of people use softboxes so there isn't that odd looking circle in people's eyes. Windows are square or rectangular. A lot of photographers will use tape on their softbox to make it look like a window. Looks a bit more natural than a circle.

Either way, if done right, I don't find either particularly distracting.

Oh, and the reason most people use umberallas instead of softboxes doesn't have anything to do with the shape of the catchlights. Umbreallas are a lot cheaper, faster to set up, and more portable. A softbox gives a much better control of lighting/feathering and more natural looking catchlights.

I think the lighting is a tad flat, but very appropriate to the subject; I'd say you got it right.

I agree the background is too much, but that's easy to alter and she's blue (white balance) and maybe too light.

The photo will look great with a few tweaks:

I thought the round catch light being natural like the round sun made sense to me.

SOOC? Yes!!!!!! All it needs is a slight contrast tweak and it's ready for printing. It's just a bit "flat" in the mid-tone values. I am not a fan of the purple BG in this shot, for this subject matter, but the lighting scheme seems solid. The main light could not be raised too much, before it would disappear, so I think the position of the main light is pretty acceptable.

great contrast...but i think you need some backlighting to separate her from the background...i would say

I think she looks a bit copy/pasted here onto the purple! How brave you are to use that color! lol I think with some editing you can make more separation from the background.

What is bothering more is the color casts on the underside of her arms... The purple is just glowing there. Her face is fine, but see the purple on her arms? was she on top of the seamless?
