I feel gypped.... my editing software doesn't have a Sharpie marking function.

Yep, that's pretty much the way we had to do it. Every now and then I'll find an old marked-up print. Something that might not be so evident, the prints had to dry first before you could even write on them. Some images took days to get just right.

Why not put glass on top and use a dry erase-ish marker, or if nothing like that was around yet, a wax pencil?

Because prints generally get darker and flatter as they dry. The grain compresses as the emulsion shrinks. Heat-drying makes it even worse. Areas that appeared nearly white when wet (like skies) would often become a nauseating gray when they came out of the dryer.

then there is the method of making notes on a piece of paper with all that information . then one didn't have to wait for the print to dry, and it was easy to file that information away.

I have a little black note book with years of print maps. In my darkroom classes I still show them how to track their burning and dodging information, as they won't remember,
