Speedlites and such

This past weekend I rented a 580EX II and 2 pocket wizard III. This was my first time to play with off camera lighting and I kept having problems with the speedlites firing consistently. I feel like I would wait long enough between shots to let it reconnect, or whatever it has to do.

Also, I could not get more than 10-15ft away from the speedlite for it to work. I've seen photos where the speedlites look 30 ft. away.

We kept the batteries fully charged, thinking that might be an issue.

I hear a lot of talk about this being the set up many photographers use, but I couldn't get it to be consistent. Should I have rented something else to help with this issue?

Canon flashes have been known to have issues with radio triggers... they emit too much RF noise, and when they are too close to the Radio Trigger, they get flaky!

I don't use Canon.. so can't answer that. I am sure someone will answer!
