Oh, for photos like these I sooooo long for my new computer with the better monitor to arrive at last! I KNOW they are better than I can see them right now - I've had the chance to see some of your photos here on a better screen.... why can't my Christmas present arrive at last???

Abandoned dock?

They're groynes as trigger said. They're essentially long sturdy fences made of wood or concrete which start on the beach and head a long way out to sea. They stop waves from washing the beach away by absorbing them.
