Maybe I am just grumpy. It looks like most people arent as annoyed as I am seeing questions like this.

... taking my chill pill.

I propose a forum name change - The Drama Forum.

I sure wish I could meet some of these people in person. Or at least observe. lol

I just assume they don't know any better... and try to be nice about it! Although I think my first post in this thread kind of made the same point you did, just more gently and informatively! :)

No. It is becoming increasingly difficult for me to bite my tongue.

The question was fine, IMO. It's the attitude that came with the next response that I have a problem with. It's as if someone here owes the OP answers.

I just assume they're trolling. And then have fun composing a reply. and then usually delete it. :/

Lol... I really should post my replies. :ban:

wow, how did I miss this gem.

As others have said spot metering, meters a specific spot in the frame. For the D90 it will meter an area of 3.5mm using your current focus point.

I agree with that totally!

If you have a D90 this is covered in the manual. Something I need to dive into a bit deeper myself. Sorry I can't be of any assistance in actually providing an answer. But I do know it is in the manual of most cameras you buy.

Also I think the OP's attitude comes from being essentially attacked. That was uncalled for which in turn caused him to have a bit more attitude with a response. Neither individual was right in this situation. All too often I find it's hard for noobs to really feel comfortable asking questions, for fear of essentially being called lazy or made to feel dumb. There's never a stupid question. Chances are I will come here to seek out answers before plugging it into google. Why? Because this is a photography forum. This is a beginners category, while this question may get asked a million times why not just answer, post a link to this very question being asked, or better yet just don't say anything at all. With no responses the poster is then made to look esle where for answers. I just don't find "google it" to be the least bit helpful. So if I now 'search' spot metering on this forum just how many threads will I actually find to be useful? My guess is anyone who has asked this question gets anything but the answer their looking for. Forums are here for a reason, if no one had any questions with regards to photography the beginners forum would never really exist.

Please be mindful that we were all 'noobs' at one point or another. We all have our own ways of seeking out answers for our questions. I just felt overall this could have been handled better. I hope it didn't discourage the OP from participating in the forum. I hope they continue to ask the 'basic' questions be it through google or reading their manual or possibly on here. That is the only way we learn. I just think a bit more understanding could go a long way with some of these sarcastic and rather rude replys to this question.

Spot metering is very, very useful for some dog breeds...

Dalmatian Images and Stock Photos. 1505 dalmatian photography and royalty free pictures available to download from over 100 stock photo companies.

I seldom use spot metering. Unless you really know what you're doing, it can be rather inefficient, and even ruinous to your pics. If you use spot metering only on occasion, you must ALWAYS make SURE to move the metering back to another mode when you're done with the spot metering, unless you use SPOT metering all the time...if you shoot a scene or two using the spot metering option, and then go to another type of scene and "think" the camera is in Matrix, evaluative, or center-weighted metering mode, you're in for (potentially) a rude surprise.

Gah, why the chill pills? I was so close to making a "Clash of the Titans" meme with your guys' avatars in it...would have been epic ;)

Has anyone taken a look at the OP's posting history? Starts with a general question, sits back and lets all of us do the work... Hmmm..

FOLLOWING YOUR LEAD, pgiz, I went back through the OP's posting history. He's from Minnesota. He's a newbie. He has been a member of TPF since December of 2011. Which of those three things do you suppose causes him to be such a...searching for the proper word here...a "disconcerting influence"??? Is it the fact that he's from Minnesota? Of that he's a newbie shooter? Or that he is a new forum member? Or is it that some forum members feel like NO simple questions can be answered with one or two 15-word sentences?

I find the asking of a simple question that has been asked and answered many times MUCH LESS objectionable than the opposite, which is when a member creates a new thread, and then immediately some forum members pile on and chastize the creator of the thread for having the audacity to create a new thread, even when the original thread was basically already dead and buried and forgotten about by everyone but a handful of people who have been on TPF since the early 2000's. It's like there's a double standard here at TPF.
