I like the idea, but the hand rail on the lower right becomes a bit overwhelming.

Agreed; if you crop the bottom off, to say, the third step, I think it works a lot better.

Yup! Cropping to the third step also gets totally rid of that distracting equipment shed off to the bottom left, and realllly strengthens the abstracted nature of the shot!
