Just purchased my first DSLR (Canon EOS T3i) I'm looking for a cost efficient Macro lens, not real cheap, but something to start off with. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

What focal length are you after?

I am a Nikon user but use a tamron 90mm macro. I love it and for the price I think it is fantastic. I have a relatively low level of skill/experience and I don't believe the expensive Nikon lens would help me take better photos (at this stage).

Or perhaps extension tubes with the lens you already have.

Spend a few dollars on some cheap ebay tubes or reversal ring before taking the plunge on a macro lens.

The Tamron 90 would be a good choice, as would the Tokina 100. You can usually find both used, and they are a bargain at under $400. Or a used Canon 100. YOu might be able to find an older lens that will function on your camera (I don't know Canon).. maybe manual focus only, which is the best way to focus for macro anyway.

My recommendation is not to buy the cheap $10 non-electrical connection extension tubes... unless you are willing to deal with some frustration. Unless you have an older lens with an external aperture ring (non-EOS mount)...these cheap tubes are basically useless.

If you want to go with tubes... For around $70 or so, you can get copies of the Kenko tubes ($200) which will provide electrical connections and full aperture / focusing capability on your body

I have both the Kenko extension tubes and the Tokina 100mm macro that Charlie mentioned above.

I LOVE the Tokina 100mm; you can get them used for under $400 (if you're really patient and willing to scour all the sites like Amazon, KEH, B&H, Ebay, CL, etc you can find one for even less--got mine for under $350) and I just can't say enough good things about that lens!

Search ebay for a Tamron 90mm 52b. Cheap, awesome. If you can get it with the teleconverter, even better.
