I've experimented with the photomerge as well. it's pretty darn handy and neat how it can snap them together for you automatically.
I've noticed that if theres a slight change in color/exposure it's very noticeable side by side. But that's easily fixable.

This shot was taken with at 19mm which made it difficult to work with. That said, I did this one manually. But most of the time I find that Photomerge works very well.

My first (and only, so far) attempt. It was taken with a not-so-great camera without a tripod, so there is some warping of the bridge.

Just be sure to overlap the images plenty, and, if you're using Photoshop and Photomerge doesn't work, use the eraser tool, worked like a charm for me.
