It's really the only strap that lets you comfortably use your hands without worrying about your camera (which will sit comfortably on your hip out of the way).
Ridiculous statement of the day award winner.

What other strap (that isn't a BR knockoff) lets you put your camera completely out of the way, have no chance of slipping off, and be ready for instant use? I can't think of anything but a sling strap (or maybe some elaborate harness) that gives you such versatility.

All of the sling straps do that. The BR isn't unique in that aspect, and certainly not "the only strap" that does it.

I've never had a problem with my Domke Gripper strap. I can put my head and one arm through it if I want added security, or just sling it over one shoulder - the camera hangs at my side, ready for instant use. I can easily bring it up, take some pictures, then let it back down.

It won't slip off and it doesn't get in the way. When I don't want a strap, it has quick disconnects. It goes on or off in seconds.

It's still the BlackRapid style. AFAIK, they make the highest quality sling straps, and I wouldn't recommend another brand. I'm guilty of being extremely brand-loyal, but I don't see that as a negative thing.

I haven't used the Domke, and while I am sure there are other good straps, his statement wasn't all that ridiculous. What the Black Rapid claims to do, it does very well. I love mine, and if you ever decide to carry a full frame camera and a Sigma 120-300 2.8, you would love it, too.

I picked up a Carry Speed strap at the camera store a couple weeks ago after going to a school event and getting tired of the weight of the camera+zoom lens+flash on my neck using the Nikon neck strap. The Carry Speed (CS-Slim) is a shoulder sling and lets it hang on my hip just like you're taking about, but since it screws in to the tripod hole I can't leave it on all the time, so I decided to leave the neck strap on as well.

I'm not sure it's the perfect solution for me yet, but so far it's working okay. The Nikon strap is good enough for incidental use, and it just hangs out of the way when I use the other strap. I also like to hang it from my neck when I'm changing lenses 'cause it puts it at a convenient height.

My only concern is that the neck strap will snag on something when my camera's hanging on my hip from the other strap. So far I'm so hyper-aware of it that it hasn't been a problem, but next weekend I'm heading to Tahoe and that will be a truer test. ;)

Bottom line: You're a BR fanboi.

BR didn't invent sling straps, so you don't get to claim that everyone esle is copying them or that all others are the BR style. They copied someone else, so they are someone else's style.

They're far overpriced for what they actually are because fanbois are willing to pay for hype, which is frankly very sad.

You can claim they have the highest quality, but we're still just talking about a nylon strap with some bits of hardware to attach to a camera and make a size adjustment. You can get one for a few bucks at any of dozens of places and attach some similar hardware from Lowes or Home Depot for a few bucks more and it will last just as long and be of just as high "quality".

And, in the end, as I said, the BR isn't the only one that delivers on what ALL sling straps deliver in terms of ease, comfort and quick access. Not even close.

Yeah, it was, because he claimed that the BR strap is the only one that does what ALL sling straps do.

They ALL do. It's not rocket science or high tech. It's a sling strap.

I've used more than one brand of sling strap, including the BR, which I also own and use, and that's where I'm speaking from. I didn't just buy and use one single manufacturer's sling strap and declare it the bestest brand sling strap of all without direct, personal, actual comparison to anything else.

I will not be hanging $3000 from a strap that is threaded into a point on my camera that was designed to secure a plate for the camera to be SETTING on, not HANGING from. When someone designs a sling strap that connects to the strap loops that WERE engineered for the weight of the camera and lens pulling on them, then I will consider one.
Has anyone considered that? Thats why some manufactures supply a "backup" strap in the even of failure.

Silly topic to argue so vehemently about, but alas, here we are.I've never tried one of these, and I have no idea if they're practical, but damn if they don't look gorgeous:Tanner Goods - Camera Strap - Tan

They do look good. I have considered making a nice leather strap myself, as my other hobby is leather work. But I have discovered neoprene provides just enough stretch to really make the difference on the wear and tear of my neck.

That's where the Mzungo strap attaches, and I like it there a lot better than the BR attached to the tripod socket personally.

Might be better suited for a smaller setup. I have a d40, so the weight isn't much of a factor.

Black Rapid FTW, mine handles gripped D700 and the monster 70-200 VRII with ease and no drama

Well there you go. Buckster always has the answer! I have never heard of them, will have to check them out.
