strap suggestions

I've never had a problem with my Domke Gripper strap. I can put my head and one arm through it if I want added security, or just sling it over one shoulder - the camera hangs at my side, ready for instant use. I can easily bring it up, take some pictures, then let it back down.

It won't slip off and it doesn't get in the way. When I don't want a strap, it has quick disconnects. It goes on or off in seconds.

I haven't used the Domke, and while I am sure there are other good straps, his statement wasn't all that ridiculous.
Yeah, it was, because he claimed that the BR strap is the only one that does what ALL sling straps do.

What the Black Rapid claims to do, it does very well.
They ALL do. It's not rocket science or high tech. It's a sling strap.

I love mine, and if you ever decide to carry a full frame camera and a Sigma 120-300 2.8, you would love it, too.
I've used more than one brand of sling strap, including the BR, which I also own and use, and that's where I'm speaking from. I didn't just buy and use one single manufacturer's sling strap and declare it the bestest brand sling strap of all without direct, personal, actual comparison to anything else.

You, sir, are reading much too far between the lines. I'm sorry if BlackRapid straps beat your wife or strangled you in the past, but there's no need downplay them like they're total crap just because I made an overly general statement about a quality product. Honestly, I don't see the need to own 10 different brands of straps just so I can say that I compared them fairly. I prefer to go off of reputation and reviews rather than to own multiple products that do exactly the same thing. In every other line of products I've used, "you get what you pay for" has been almost unequivocally reliable, and I would much rather pay a small premium than get a cheaper product that may have small, annoying defects. I'm glad that you're happy with your five different sling straps, but I will continue to use my one BlackRapid and recommend them to anyone who is in need of a great strap that does exactly what they advertise.

Now you're the one making too much of it. You made a claim that the BR was the ONLY ONE that could do x, y, and z. That was a false statement that deserved to be corrected, so I did.

That's it and that's all.

Black Rapid FTW, mine handles gripped D700 and the monster 70-200 VRII with ease and no drama

Do you screw it to the tripod mount on your 70-200 or to the grip?

on the lens tripod mount. I've accidentally screwed it to the grip (out of habit) and used it without realizing it for a while and didn't have issues. seems to balance better on the lens

Check out the Crumpler Industry Disgrace. Love mine.

That is not, and that is not all...especially since it was my post you decided to make a point out of. FWIW, personally, I never said there weren't other straps that did the same thing. What I said was that what Black Rapid claims to do, it does well. You are the one reading too much into people's posts.

Black Rapid makes a good product and people pay a good price for them. If that offends you in some way, I don't know what to say.

The canon E1 hand-strap is also very comfortable, especially if you're not using longer lenses or are only going out for a bit. Combine it with a shoulder strap or backpack and you're pretty much covered for any occasion.

Saw a guy in the mall... Camera came off his strap, bounced down a flight of steps, his look was priceless..... It was a strap that attached to the tripod mount of his camera. The camera was a fairly big DSLR with a prime lens. Not sure if the fault was due to strap or user not attaching it properly to the base of the camera.... In any case, I'm going to stick with attaching the strap to the built in strap holders my DSLR body.... Even if it's the ugly straps provided by the manufacturer.

Exactly what I was saying earlier.

I hemmed and hawed on this one for a bit. The black rapid seemed like the most viable option but then I found some reviews on this system:Amazon.com: Black Color Carry Speed Cs-1 MK II Camera Sling Strap Rapid for DSLR: Camera & Photo

I love it and the options that are standard on it are amazingly good at maintaining control of your camera in a multitude of scenarios. The only issue I had with this strap was the lack of instructions but it was simple enough to figure out after some fiddling.

That, I would be comfortable with. But I am not to big on the idea of screwing the thing into the bottom of my grip, as I doubt the thread insert is all that secure.

I have looked at that one as well. The only thing I dont like about it is the bracket that must be attached to the camera first to clip the strap to. When in the field I often switch between handheld and tripod frequently, which would require removing the bracket, something that Black Rapid avoids by utilizing their Quick Release Fastener

Yeah, for some reason, the BR fasteners don't work very well with some of my tripod mount plates. The heads on them are just a bit too thick, so I can never quite seat the plate to the tripod without pulling the BR fastener screw and replacing it with the one that came with the tripod mounting plate. I even bought the BR slim-head models of the screw after researching the problem, but it didn't seem to help.

It's not a problem as long as I'm not going to be switching from strap to tripod, but it is one of the things I don't like about the BR system.

When it comes to the whole "stap secured to the tripod mount" debate, I've never once heard a first-hand account of the tripod mount failing and causing the camera to drop. I've heard plenty of "oh, I know a guy who... blah blah blah" and people admitting to not connecting the screw properly, but never once have I seen someone come forward and say that their own tripod mount failed on the camera body. Maybe I'd believe it if I actually say some photos from a credible person, but these second-hand accounts make for completely unfrounded paranoid. If $3000 cameras were dropping off sling straps left and right, I think it would be more of an issue than it is now.

So, basically, those accounts don't count unless you want to count them, which you don't, because you're a BR fanboi.

Got it.
