Street market photos - please look and share feedback

Spent the late afternoon wandering through an outdoor market..... a few of my pics are here..... Flickr: BethBorrego's Photostream

I would like comments and criticisms on them please so I can improve. I have not spent much time with my camera since I got it on Christmas in terms of the learning it. What you see I got from a DVD tutorial.....and I want to get better.

10 photos is a little much for a critique. Try to choose a few of your very best shots next time

I will give it a shot though...

1) Creative shot, but there is just too much going on. Try to focus on just one subject. You included too much.
2) Rather bland shot. Try to be more creative.
3) Very interesting! The hubcap is distracting though. Easy crop.
4) Good DOF. But a little boring.
5) Looks like you used the flash. Again there is too much going on.
6) same as 5
7) Very good! You focused in on a single subject! The bottom of the fruit is a little to close to the edge and next time try and use a wider aperture to blur the background a little more.
8 ) same as 5
9) Bland. The fin is cut off. Zooming in on the eye would have made this more interesting IMO.
10) same as 5. Try to capture the texture of the fruit/veggies.

You have much to learn, but you are off to a good start.
Try reading up on composition!

Did you take any of the shoppers interacting with stall holder ? most of these are too tight and could have been shot anywhere

No, it was cold and they were closing up when we were there. There was not a good opportunity for people action. So, in the absence of that, I worked on close ups and textures, and tried to ge the background to soften (in the pomegranite and jar row for example). I love candids of people, best one I have to date I took with my phone at a renaissance festival.

i like the jar row.

i also like the peanuts, but the flash is a bit harsh. is this the on camera flash? if you must use the on camera, try diffusing it.

the brussel sprouts are pretty cool. i honeslty didnt know they grew on stalks. but again, harsh shadow from the flash.


in the future you should keep c&c to three or 4 images. and make an additional thread if necessary.

The jars are one of my favorites too. The flash was a camera flash, I don't have any other kind.....yet. Any ideas on how to diffuse the flash? Cloth over the flash perhaps? (cheesecloth for example)

My favorite is the pomegranate.

The market was something we stumbled upon during a day trip three hours from home. I will try the same thing again at a local market....there is an amish market 5 minutes from me. That should be fun.

there are some cool videos on youtube that show how to make a diffuser out of a film canister.

this is cheap. and worked rather well for me the day i used it.

or you can make a bit fancier one out of some cardboard and tape, that will allow you to direct the light, or diffuse it more..

That should be exciting :er: ive seen a few programs about them on TV

10 photos for C&C at once is a little many (many have been told this), however, I think they are nice for beginning photos with a new camera. I especially like that fire photo.

Thanks PG. I took a series of the fire, that one was my favorite because the fire looked sort of disconnected from the fire in the bin....

the flash ruins these. Get a better lens so you dont have to use the flash.
