The first hour of shooting the Olympus EP-3

Woot! Woot! I just got mine about two weeks ago. I haven't had the chance to go downtown yet, but I think it will shine for street photography.

This is the f***ing story of my life here.
People never c/c my pictures.
Is it that they don't see anything in them, or don't like them?
What is going on?

It's the weekend and you're moaning before the first hour is up. C'mon Lew, you know better than that.

I think #1 is great. There is an emotional tie between the couple that is endearing. No, I don't think he's trying to maneuver into a full nelson.

The headless woman and excessive asphalt hurts this one IMO.

Much better framing of the crowd with #3.


Overall, not too shabby on your first voyage with new gear. Thanks for posting.

#1 looks like a mugging taking place, #2 is boring. Just my .02 :meh:

LOL! My first impression on #1 was "oh my, what is that man doing to that woman?". It does kind of look unnatural. That being said I do love the black and white and amazing lighting on that one. Very nice detail in the transition of tones. #2 is a different story. It seems spaced out to much and not sharp compared to #1.

#2 is classic. either that middle boy is saying "damn that girl is hot" or "damn, i hope my sister has hot friends"

IMO #1 is very nice and you can almost feel the affection for the woman from her husband.

#2 gives me the feeling of a nice 4rth of july parade or something. I would try and crop out the 1/2 man on the left though next to the girl.

I'm also left wondering what's going on in #1 - which I think is great. A photograph is in some ways like a short story: not always a good thing to tell the viewer everything.

I feel #2 is a little messy with the man walking out of the frame. I wish the man sitting in the back wasn't cut off (foot). I'm wondering "what are these people's stories?". Are they all friends, or just a few? Is that boy checking out that girl? Is that girl aware of it? Black guy reading a text message.... from who? Why are they sitting outside Long and Foster real estate company?

Agree on #2... I think a tighter crop on the 3 boys, and being a bit lower to the ground, would have made a very retro looking shot.

As for the lack of C&C,given the tone of a lot of your responses to other people, I'd guess it's one of two things a lot of times. Either your tone when responding to other threads, or how they think you'll actually receive an honest C&C. For what it's worth, that's my critique.

#2 has a lot of very small details in it, and is exactly the kind of photo that simply "dies" with the ridiculous maximum size image criteria this photography website uses. The man on the left: half of him is shown in the reflected image...but we cannot see it properly. The kid on the right with the fedora--his feet are lifted off the ground, but one can barely see that without looking very closely. Both adults are clutching the ever-present mobile phones that today's adults seem to hold onto like a kid holds his favorite toy. The faces of the people are so small that their expressions cannot be read. A medium shot like this just "dies" when seen on this forum. This kind of street work, with multiple people shown in the context of a naturally-occurring environment, suffers terribly when it is forced to be shrunken down to a size that's smaller than a postcard. It's a shame that we are now in the second decade of the 21st century, and we only get to see images shown at a size that's more appropriate for 9600 baud modems and 1993...

Yeah, definitely much more impact seen large in the Zenfolio slide show!!! The kid in the hat is actually resting his feet on an empty soda bottle! Could not see that at the TPF size.

I'd like to ask: Do you feel that you are payed less attention when using the new, small camera, as opposed to a bigger d-slr? Is this new camera small enough so that people dismiss you as just another point and shooter? or does it make you seem "photographer-y", if you know what I mean? How are people at say, a street fair/event reacting to this new camera?

I've been going back and forth on the EVF-2 vs EVF-3. Although the EVF-2 has a brighter viewfinder with a slightly greater magnification, the EVF-3 has the locking mechanism and ~$80 less expensive.
