Many people here talk about multiple backups and it reminds me of a friend of mine years ago running a business from his home. He was paranoid about loss of data as it would have killed his business. He purcased a redundant server and had backups running to tape each night and pointed to the stack of tapes proudly. I looked at them and his home office, smiled and asked him what about a fire? The look on his face was priceless. Same day he had a safety deposit box set up at his bank for his tapes which he brought in every second day. Now for us I'd say every second day might be a bit much, but storing your files in a seperate location every now and then to protect vs some household destruction would be a good idea. If you don't want to spend $$ on a safety box somewhere find a freined you trust and store each of your backups at each other's places. About 3 years ago I put some DVDs of family stuff at my bank. These days, there are plenty of online storage sites where you can back up to witout leaving your house. If the data is that important it should be off site.

Fortunately the Large JPG of the kids are stored on the father in law's computer. just have to copy them off before he destroys his computer again (he doesn't use redundancy in hard-drives, he has multiple redundancy in dodgy "clean up" "system mechanic" "firewall" "Anti-Virus" stuff...that fight between each other so much that it slowly eats away at his computer until it locks up! Best get my images back before the next crash, eh?

I have one of my backup drives stored at a neighbors, and another 872 miles away.

Yes, that sounds like a plan. I think I will be backing up full res images online from now on, as well as on the local hard drives. Cheers

It may be, although I cannot see how...no reason to suspect damage between "working" and "not working". maybe something sat there and suddenly hit, I dunno. Will get some folks looking at it...if it can be done, I may do it, but money wise, I won't be paying out silly money for it...I learned my lesson!

Basically its only real moving parts other than the fans and heat sinks, just wear and tear.
I would and wouldn't recommended SSD(solid state drives). Very durable like having an internal flash drive in your system. Bad news someone in your professon it wouldn't be cost effective.

Why not look into Dual layer DVDs stores about 9gb, pretty durable just the storage is the anus part.

I may look at DVD and so on, but it's a pain to store anything physical in this house...the kids and the wife have stuff everywhere...I'd lose the DVDs!

I don't have one!
When the kids go to bed, the wife often retreats to the bedroom to read/surf/do her degree assignments. I have 3 or 4 hours to do as I please. But I only have my sofa, my laptop, and me. No space to move to other than that....

So I have my own time, but less of my own space.

The problem with Costco & Sam's Club is they never have the same item in all stores, nor the same item all the time. Costco has a 1.5tb on their site, for that same $139.

Lol I was at Sam's, and I saw a pallet full of d5100 for sale. Call me picky but I generally do not shop for electronics where I get my produce.

Have made a start...I have 2 x 1TB hard drives, one is the working drive and the other is backed up upon connecting to the computer. Kept separate at other times. Have a cable in the post to try recover the crashed drive (if it's a controller problem).
Have been looking into cloud/remote storage as well, and just pricing up my options.
Also taking back ups to relatives houses for their computers.

So yes...I learned my lesson!

I was just at Costco last week looking at fireproof safes. This post is making me realise I need to go back and look at my backup process and upgrade it very very soon.
