Suggesion for photo BACKUP

It is much faster, yes. And I'm not dogging you, but personally, for regular back up usb for the normal few gigs I back up takes between 5-10 minutes which I'm totally okay with. That thing is pretty cool, though. I might get one just for the utility of it. It takes SATA eSATA and usb hard drives. That's internal and external, yes? That would be awesome to have if I can dig out all of my old hard drives from machines I've built.

Yup and it's a pretty handy little thing for $35. I prefer this over USB anyday. This pretty much takes external drives that are SATA compatible. Won't work with older non sata hd. It works with 3.5 or 2.5 drives.

If your boot drive fails for any reason because of OS, you can plug it in to that thing w/out opening up both of your comp and take out the folder needed. All in all, pretty good deal. If I can save a few gig of files 7 to 10 times faster w/out spending more money, why not? If you think about it that's 1gb per 14 sec at about 75 MBps :) (although it's rated at 3gbps, with a 7200 rpm drive it only reaches to average 75MBps speed at the moment which is still not bad)

I suggest Mirror Raid Arrays.

Data saved to the array saves simultaneously to 2, 3, 4,.. , n drives (they're mirrors of each other) I have a Solid State running my OSs, a 1TB Media Drive, and 4 500GB HDDs in a mirror array. The likelihood that 4drives all fail? Odds are more likely i'll decide to smash them with a bat. There's no discernible difference in save-time, no transfer rate. In addition 500GB drives are like 40$, 1TB drives 55-60$, so it's cost effective versus some of the insanely priced externals out there, and you manually have to transfer it or a program has to manually transfer files to it, introducing room for error and corruption. Mirror Arrays instantly save 2,3,4, etc copies of the file, every time you save.

As for removable or offsite storage from fire, or theft... Moko is right; eSata is currently the fastest and least corruptible way to backup and store. In my experience, USB transfers have been so riddled with corruption I only have one left into my router as a network swap drive, small files i want to make available to my whole network for temporary periods of time.

..Mozy/Carbonite.. Knowing their access security and encryption protocols, I simply don't trust them.

I use an iPad to backup during the shoot. Then I back up onto another hard drive once I'm back home.

I use Mozy and an external drive but this is food for thought. Thanks Mo.

thieves are more likely to steal your expensive backup solutions rather than some flash drives and other cheap backup solutions.

i just leave my pics on my computer and have time machine do it with an old external hd.

if you want something fast and reliable. you should buy a emc san with 300 tb of hard drive and use a tape library for your offside backup.

CMON, your backing up what? 3 tb of photos? keep 1 copy on 1 hard drive and sync your onsite hard drive with your ofsite once in a while and you should be allright. you can also keep a copy on dvd. thats what i do enyway. i endup with 1 copy on dvd and 2 hard drive copy. If you think transfering 4-8 gig of data on a hard drive is time comsuming, you have a problem.

Yup I'm happy with the way I'm going with my storage option. I don't care to go through online companies at the moment. Just like my method might fail so could their method as they make you sign a waver that they don't guarantee the file being 100% safe and they're not held accountable for loosing the files :er:

Mr. Mac. thanks for the suggesion. In a way I guess thats what I'm doing. It's basically used as a hotswap RAID with only the image files, rather than the entire OS files.

Red, I like that idea, and although I don't care for Apple products as much, beside the iPhone of course, I am waiting to purchase the iPad 2 when it comes out next year. Its told to have the cameras along with mini USB drive. Which, if I'm correct, could down the road be used to hook up the camera and using it as live view feature

ITF: $35 isn't an expensive thing to steal. Beside, I dont care if they steal my dock as long as the hard drive is safe.

Gache: time is money baby. If I can do 10 mins work in 1 min, I'd rather do that turn off the comp and hit the bed. DVDs are ok but that's just more clutter around. Also if they get scratched, bye bye. HDs also have a very good shelf life. Could leave it for decades and it'll still work out.

Anyway to each our own. It's a suggesion for anyone who's interested. Do you really want to debate about whos method is the right way? As long as you're doing something to back up your files that's all that matters.

No matter what the subject is, people will find a way to argue about it in this forum on to who's got the better idea......... :er:

Just like if you search "online storage" you'll see bunch of people saying they prefer HD and vice versa

Damnit it's Thanksgiving, I just came to check out a damn recipe and here I am. PC OUT! Have fun wherever you are and make it an enjoyable day for you and your family.

I wouldn't put that much faith in HDDs. They have moving parts and moving parts are just more points of failure. With as many dead drives as I've seen at work and just throughout the years, you have to be aware that you could purchase a brand new top of the line drive that's supposed to have amazing reliability, use it for a month, and have it go out on you. It's just the nature of the beast.

My storage solution cost me about $600 so far, but it's probably one of the best photography investments I've made to date. It's so easy and provides a true backup solution with redundancy.
