Suggestions for new lens

Hi I want to buy a new lens for my camera but don’t know where to start. I’m not a professional photographer AT ALL! I just enjoy taking pictures of my kids and animals and nature. We go on a lot of walks and I like to take pictures but I don’t know much about lens and I am confused about how to figure out which lens will work with my camera. I’m also a dog groomer so I take a lot of dog pictures to advertise my work lol. I have a canon mark iv 5d and it says EOS on it. The only lens I have that fits it is a 50mm/1.4. Does anyone have any suggestions for me preferably under $1,000.

Welcome to the Forum Jessica.
I don't shoot Canon so won't try specific recommendations.
You should be able to use any full frame EOS lens, if all you have is a 50mm prime the lenses that are most likely to give you an affordable increase in capabilities are a kit zoom (something like 28-70mm) & a cheapish telephoto zoom (70-200, 100-300 etc).
The first of these will allow you to adjust the field of view in both directions, getting nearly twice as much in at the wide end & a moderate magnification at the long end. For many photographers this is the only lens they use.
The second is more for magnifying distant subjects, I tend to find telephotos like this ideal for both kids & pets outdoors. Some telephoto lenses are VERY expensive (more than a car) but there are plenty of cheaper options too. Faster telephotos might be nice but are probably not needed for your sort of shooting

I'd suggest top of your list should be a Canon EF 24-70mm f2.8 L II lens, if that's too expensive then the f4 version is a bit cheaper. You could consider a 24-105mm f4 L which is a very handy focal length but not quite as sharp as the first two. I appreciate that these are over your preferred price range, but there's no sense in putting poor quality glass on that camera

After that I'd be looking at the EF 70-200mm f4 L or the 100-400mm f5.6 L if you wanted longer focal lengths.

My preference would be for the 24-105.
That is a good general purpose zoom range.

Hi Jessica!! I was a dog groomer for 12+ years, then became a professional photographer! The 50 1.4 was my favorite lens for so long. I STILL use that lens, its my main money maker!! If I were you, I'd consider the 24-70 (its a bit more pricey, but it is SO incredibly versatile and quick!). Otherwise, I'd look into the 35 sigma art

I agree with the others. There is a lot of commonality in their thoughts.

First, the only way to get the most from a lens is with the proper skills. Shutter speed, aperture ISO, depth of field are critical concepts. Investing in skills will pay big dividends and it only takes time. Folks on here are happy to help

I have the Canon 70-200 2.8 L. Awesome but new is more than your budget.

The Canon 24-70 2.8 is also a holy grail lens. I don't have it but I do have the Canon 24-105 f 4 L. It is an excellent walking around lens. Slow, but sharp and versatile. It is near your price range. It may be the perfect compromise.

I would suggest getting an image stabilized lens. Unless you are a pro always shooting subjects from a tripod, you will be better off in a wider range of situations.

+1 on an IS/stabilized lens. At least for anything beyond 75mm.
