Sun Setting Behind the Trees

Took this shot yesterday along the Columbia River in Oregon.

This is the exact type of scene that digital sensors do the worst at--really bright,bright sun. The sensor just "clips", and blows the highest values, and then there's like one lower value area right around the blown hotspots, and then the next values are wayyyy down there...it's a pretty scene, especially when youj are there, but the way digital cameras render this type of lighting just looks ugly to me...on film, this kind of scene would render much,much differently, with a lot of variation in the brighter areas.

I think the original capture's exposure needs to be more biased toward the brighter areas, and the camera's Tone Curve (ie, the contrast setting) needs to be set to LOW, to try and keep the highlights from blowing clear out, and then the RAW capture needs to be tweaked in post.
