Here is I picture I took looking down the road. I tried to avoid the streetlamps and other houses. Now that I look at it, I realized I should have used a more narrow f-stop to get a better depth of field. Oh well! I used a 20D with the 18-55mm kit lens. (@55mm, f/5.6, ISO 100)

2- I included this one to give an idea of my street :)

Any thoughts?

DoF is controlled by more than just lens aperture.

Focal point distance from the camera, and to the background, is also a major variable that affects DoF. Lens focal length also figures into the DoF you get.

If your focal point was on the clouds, and that focal point was 1/4 mile away (1320 feet), with your camera, 55 mm and f/5.6 the near focus limit would be about 85 feet away, and the far focus distance would be at infinity.

If you change only the focus distance, to just 100 feet, the near limit becomes about 45 feet while the far limit is still at infinity.

By changing the focal point distance instead of the lens aperture you don't also have to change the shutter speed or the ISO.
