For me I would try cropping in (or if you can somehow reshoot, framing in) just the branches' reflection and the broken ice. The mud and gravel and goop around it doesn't work well, IMHO.

Thanks for the thoughts. I probably won't get back there this year when there is still ice but the puddle is always there, except in high summer when it is reduced to a muddy patch.

This is definitely better viewed in a larger size.

What I like about it NOT cropped is that there's a muddy mess, then the puddle obscured with broken ice, and then suddenly in the middle of it, there's the reflection with perfect still clear water. Like a little window of hope in the midst of troubles.

I might crop just a bit off the left side of the frame to get rid of that very bright spot at the edge so it doesn't compete too much for attention. Might also play with a square crop, just for kicks and giggles

I did a quick square crop (put hand over left 1/3) and I think the original is just fine.

Thanks, Leo. I can't burn selectively with the software I have but there's an enlarger on the way and I'm looking around on Ebay and locally for other kit; so once I'm up and running with a darkroom, in a month or two, I'll take a look at correcting that bright patch.
