It is hard to focus on a dark subject such as this as there is no frame of reference. Two ways to do it are to measure and set the lense- you do have a tape measure in your camera bag don't you, and to shoot several shots slightly changing focus each shot. Fast film, small iris, fast len. SLOOOOOW shutter. There is just not good solid plane for you to visulise through a focus screen, and nothing to blunce the auto focus off. Besides soft works for me in this case.
