If you're on a budget, this lens ROCKS! We have had both versions - with the built in motor, and without. Personally, I think that the one without the BIM is better and sharper, but both are extremely nice lenses. We are currently using the one with the BIM.

Thats the one. The previous version, without the motor is said to sometimes be sharper than this one.

I think the sigma 24-70mm f2.8 produces slightly better results for around the same $$, but it's a lot heavier.

I have this lens and also tried the Tamron....the Sigma is freaking heavy but really well built.

I have the 17-50mm tamron f2.8, very happy with it so far, huge upgrade over the 18-55mm kit lens.

Yes, I bought this lens about a month ago, and I don't believe I've taken it off my D90 since then. It's great. Very sharp. I used to keep the 18-105 kits lens on all the time, but now this lens has retired it.

Got mine at Durys in Nashville. I usually buy from Amazon, but wanted to visit Durys anyway, so this gave me a good excuse.

+1

From what I've read, the Sigma is a BIT better, but for real world use...I doubt you'd notice a difference. IMO, it boils down to price, weight/size, personal preference.

For brand comparison, I DO own a Tamron 70-200mm and...I'm not impressed with the quality. It's sharp, but the optics aren't the best in terms of CA and flare handling. The build quality is good, but it's just not as "tight" as I would hope a "pro-ish" lens to be. On the contrary, I used to own a Sigma 105mm macro lens and that thing was a beast. Nice and tight build quality, great optics.

So, just judging on previous brand experience, I'd pick the Sigma. I doubt I'd buy another Tamron.

Hope that helps ;)
