Anyone know the purpose of that "turn" sign on the Jeep?

Nice set; I'm assuming the 'Turn' marker is used to indicate to a group of vehicles on a road move which direction to go at a junction.

I vaguely remember the old man (WWII vet) told me that they were for convoy use.
But they consistently were disabled because the light they gave off could cause issues.
But that was a long time ago.
