Tell me everything about this picture (LIP)

Have a look at pixel-peeper.com, there you can look at examples of photos taken with different lenses. You'll see some really nice photos with blurred backgrounds taken with the 1.8. It should do just fine for you. Even with a 3.5, you can do things to add extra blur to your background, like positioning your subject well away from any background objects.
 
Is 1.8 really that much different than 1.4?

Canon, yes. It's very worth it to have the 50/1.4. Better build quality, ultrasonic motor, and more aperture blades.

On Nikon, I've heard that the 50/1.8G beats out the f/1.4 variants of both D and G.
 
Looks like a Canon 85 1.2 L shot to me, other than minor adjustments it looks spot on.
