tethered shooting without software

here's the deal. i created an action with automator and image capture to allow me to connect a camera via usb, and automatically import to lightroom.
it works.
the file transfer is real slow, though. roughly 10 seconds delay before the image appears in my library in lightroom.

what factors would influence file transfer other than the memory card, and computer disk space/RAM?

Interrupt reaction time, or if you're not using an interrupt (device signals the processor) and your are instead polling, then the polling interval adds the delay.
