I think its oversharpened. I set the in-camera sharpness to high, and that probably was a bad thing.

I also messed with saturation for the first time EVER. I probably went overboard.

As far as composition, its kinda bland. But this place was really cool. It was flat, arid, and NOTHING growing (when I live in a place that has tons of vegetation). It was a really neat contrast and I was trying really hard to get that. I don't know if I did or not.

The picture looks kinda weird.

You might want to try shooting from a lower point-of-view next time.

Try putting the camera on the ground next time.

It's hard to tell how tall things are sometimes if you don't have something else to reference it to.

Yeah. It's also where all the noise came from... That's just how they roll.

Don't really know anything about the Panasonic Lumix FZ-20, but looking at the images on the Panasonic Lumix FZ-20 Flickr Group the images look pretty good. You might want to check the settings of you camera to be sure something not set wrong.

Is this version any better? I toned it down a bit and used another form to resize it (one that didn't emphasize sharpness).

This picture looks more natural. There's something weird going on in the clouds though...noise? JPEG artifacts?

My 2 cents -- I'm not sure, but I think the feeling you were going for might have been captured better using a wide angle lens - in your case with the P&S, maybe if you had not zoomed in as close as you did, IF you did...I'm just kind of winging it here on thoughts and suggestions. I also think the bush in the foreground may be taking away from the barren look. As far as the original vs. the edit I'm torn....in a way I like the coloring of the first shot better; the reddish cast to the ground makes me feel more like I'm in a hot acrid setting. As I said, just my 2 cents. Hope something I've said may trigger an "ah-ha thats it" discovery.

Thank you so much!!! The shot was taken as wide as it can go (36mm on my camera). But you're totally right. It needs more width. I have a really nice .8 magnifier I'll put on the front. But now its rained, and the barrens are pure mud. :-)

I have another one without a bush in the foreground as well... I'm not digging it, though. Also, nevermind the upper left cyan corner...lol. This was a quick PS job to show you what the one without a foreground subject looked like.
