What's new

The Coffee House

If I do go, it would be in Scottsdale (not my choice, I'm just tagging along with someone) but I spent all day looking at reviews at all the resorts in Scottsdale and I am completely terrified.
Scottsdale is a nice enough area, even though it is metro Phoenix, but seriously, there's nothing there to be terrified of. Just don't leave your shoes outside. I looked at a house in Scottsdale, a beautiful Hopi-style "clay" house, because it is a nice (but expensive) area for retirees.

I don't know if I'd be able to sleep at night. I would be scared of them being on me at night possibly stinging me..I've read on resort reviews this has happened several times. It's scary for a new englander like me who doesn't have these to be fear.

My first time in Arizona, I found out that road runners are actually a real bird! We saw one from a hot air balloon.

Beep beep! (That one’s for the older looney tunes crowd)

Here in our valley we are a "buffet" for things that bite, but surprisingly there are very few actual cases that require medical assistance. I did get called out once for a woman who claimed there was a Rattle Snake in her kitchen. I suggested we burn the house down, but another (more level headed) member peeked in to see it was only a Garter Snake, and safely removed it to the outside.😉

I went to the Maine Lobster festival today with MLW and MLSIL. We each had a nice lobster dinner.

Since my wedding band had to be cut off my finger a few years ago so I could get an X-ray of my hand, I picked one up at the festival. The lobster that previously wore it didn’t complain.

Grew up in PHX when desert corridors stretched into new subdivisions. Yup, all sorts of fauna showed up: lots of roadrunners(cuckoo relative) in the planters.

Unfortunately, I washed my wedding ring in hot water a number of years ago and it shrank... that's my story and I'm sticking to it... 😁

See, you of all folks here can assure @nerwin that AZ scorpions don't really get to the size of 25 lbs, that's just a grandpa's tale... they only get up to about 7-8 lbs from what I've heard...

You do need something powerful, like a .357 or .44 magnum, for the big ones. But a .22 is more than adequate for anything around 5lbs. Smaller than that just gets stepped on or kicked--repeatedly.

How is it? Only thing that is holding me back is scorpions. I heard they are in your beds and shoes. Freaking me out, makes me not want to go!
Scorpions aren’t what you should worry about, rattle snakes are.

Been there bunches, older brother is a snowbird who spends all winter south of Phoenix. I do a few hikes whenever I’m there, snakes, not scorpions.

Rattlers are not a daytime issue in summer; night is another matter when they're out hunting rodents. Winter mornings will see them hauling themselves out into sunny spots to warm up. Have stepped on them in shadowy areas on cold winter mornings around Carefree/Cave Creek. Very sluggish, very cold-blooded. Not aggressive by nature.

Howdy Folks! Another hot, humid day here. 100F and steamy, means another weekend spent inside. I seem to have gotten to a point where I no longer appreciate boonie stomping in the hot, torrid weather we have here.

On another note, one of the kittens decided to step on the power strip and turn off my computer rather abruptly. At first I thought it was a power outage, but quickly realized that the lights were still on... well, in the house anyway. The dogs have done the same in the past.

Toronto came in 2nd this morning for the planet's worst air quality! Brutal year for wild fires out West. Memories of that long ago 2 pack/day habit--hack, choke, splutter...

I was trying to make a time-lapse of stars last night starting around 22:30. They sky was mainly grey with smoke. For over 2 hours all I got was about 1 star. The rest were hidden.

Yeah - Maine Governor keeps issuing AQIs. Stay safe/healthy out there.
