The D600 Disaster: Nikon Finally Offers Some Real Relief?

per the last sentence, second paragraph, it has been noted elsewhere that some d600s were replaced with d610s. I think this was identified in europe.

About time Nikon did something about this, this is all I've ever heard about this model.

Sounds like a VERY good plan for owners of affected D600 cameras! Funny what a class-action lawsuit or two can get accomplished!

How could something like this even happen? Shouldn't their QC people catch that prior to shopping from the factory?

The comparison with Fuji's handling of a far smaller problem with the X-T1 is instructive. Aside from fixing the light leak issue, they've also reworked the feel of the back directional button pad that drew criticism. This took less than a month--not nearly two years.

No. QC cant catch everything, Like buying a new Car they can't tell which ones will be a lemon or recalls that may occur until its been used long enough for any complaints reported.
QC is basic stuff like buttons are on and not placed upside down things of that nature. I bought a Canon Spare battery new that wouldn't except a charge, I then found out there was a issue with some of them posted in a service bulletin. Canon Sent me two new batteries for my one returned and both are working perfectly. Not sure if the getting two new ones was intentional or by accident but I am not going to complain.

I'd agree. However, even as the evidence piled up, Nikon by turns ignored/denied/explained away the D600's problems. Nikon apologists on various sites downplayed the issue or lectured D600 owners on the necessity of regular sensor hygiene. Some moderators deleted news/discussion of the impending class action suits against Nikon to protect their relationship--real or imagined--with the company. It's all likely to cost Nikon a great deal more than a timely response to a widespread problem when it emerged.

That's unfortunate, I expected better from them. Especially with photographers, the industry built on brand loyalty.

I bought my D600 when I knew this was a problem. Keep hatin'

Sure... if you're willing to pay someone to test ............ every ................ single .................... camera.

Mass production mans lower prices. It also means you're not getting a custom-made item.

Yes that's the sad part and must have left a bad taste for some. Glad to see they are doing something about now but should have never went this long.

To be fair how would Nikon test every camera's shutter, by clicking it 1000 times to check for spots. Then you would have a shutter count of a used camera.

Consider the D600 to be "the Ford Pinto of the camera industry".

lol. You take enough really bad photos with a D600, and it bursts into flames.
