The picture is well-composed, well focussed, etc but you are trying to make a point with the title that the picture doesn't show. The picture then becomes an illustration to the text.

I like the composition, but it's too bright to convey your feeling. You have nice texture in the brick and stairs, I would probably crop the white ceiling out. If it was darker, I think it would be more brooding.

The best advice I can give is make the subject dwarfed by a bleak scene, or make the subject fill the frame and have him be more expressive.
