The image in the viewer jumps...

I'm a beginner. I have a Nikon D5000, and today when I was taking pictures I noticed a change when I press the button to take a picture. After I take the picture, the image in the viewer (viewfinder? eye piece?) jumps slightly. It didn't do that before. I had changed my lenses a few times before that. I tried to use my longer lens (two came with the kit) to take a picture of some flowers at close range. It made a small, light grinding noise and wouldn't do anything for me. Everything's in working order, except that slight jump after I take the picture. Could anyone tell me what's happening?

Yup, sounds like you're just seeing the VR turning on/off.
