1984 didn't work for me at all. Stopped reading it, didn't get to me at all.

I know, it's kinda dark and, erm... uneasy. I didn't like it first, too.
I guess it's why I prefered Brave New World, everybody's happy there, in their stupid way. You should try BNW... Personally, I find it's one of the finest utopias ever written, and it seems very natural... I mean I don't feel like questionning the action. Try it. But don't mind the begining...

Try reading Orwell's 'Down and Out in Paris and London'.
If you like utopias then try 'Erehwon' by Samuel Butler. A brilliant satire on Victorian England and written in 1872 it was way ahead of it's time. What can you do with a Society that only eats cabbages that have died from natural causes?
Another excellent read - G K Chesterton's 'The Man Who Was Thursday'.

There's a novel I liked a lot called The Perfume from Patrick Süskind and its about a serial killer in France of the 18c. The descriptions are amazing and the story is so interesting.

*amazing resurrection*

well, i just finished 1984... In the beginning i found it intensely boring, but the third part is really amazing. Though now i have a lot on my mind and i'm deeply into questionning life, i'm glad i read it. And thanks to everybody who told me to read it :thumbup:
