It's hard for non-Mainers to grasp the tourist season. It's not xenophobia or us being crotchety, it is truly a massive influx of out of staters that clog the roads and make day-to-day life difficult for locals. I believe the population triples in peak summer time. What makes things worse is that there are a lot of "city people" who are famously rude and loud.
Its good for the economy but hard to deal with.
Come down here and go to Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge, or Cades Cove during tourist season.
Trust me, *I* grasp the "tourist season" and why it makes one cranky.
I won't even go to Cades Cove on the weekends from May through October, because of the tourists, and it's one of my favorite places on this planet. But the influx of tourists make it intolerable. I just went up Saturday for probably my LAST weekend Cove trip until November, and even then, I went up early in the morning and got out of there by 11 a.m. Good thing too--saw some friends further down the mountain--they were just headed up as I was leaving (they saw me on the side of the road taking some pictures and pulled over). I heard yesterday they got stuck in what I call Cove Loop Hades--there's an 11-mile, one-way loop road through the Cove. There are signs all along it telling people NOT to stop in the road, and there are ample pullovers all along the way. But as soon as someone spots a deer, or a wild turkey, or a squirrel, they STOP. In the middle of the road. And if they see a BEAR? Well, forget moving again. Sure enough, my friends said they got stuck at a "bear sighting" and didn't move at all for over an hour. UGH!!
Then when you DO get out of the car and get set up to take pictures of birds, or deer or just about anything--you have about 3 seconds before some wild child will come running and screaming to chase off whatever wildlife might have been in the area.
I hate tourists.
And yes, that's a bit hypocritical, because sometimes I *are* one.
