You need to have something interesting on your person to attract his attention. Portrait photographers will have a cuddly toy in the studio for exactly this reason.
Shot 1 is still a very good image IMO, bar the slightly overexposed right hand side.

it doesnt matter what you do my son rarely makes eye contact... drs think he is a little autistic he actually has an eval. tomoro at 1.
