yeah. right.

This topic is one thing I definately do not miss about France. Over there, they would always be showing dead bodies (mainly in iraq) on the news. It's acceptable practise there to show all that sort of blunt gore in the news. It just became so utterly gruesome at some times I stopped watching the news all together.

Thankfully here in Australia, they don't show dead bodies like that on TV. The journalists here try to deal with the news story in other ways. I must admit, the french news worked on me - it made me aware of things, it shocked me, and I saw things I never would have seen in Australia, but then again it physically made me sick.

You're alright bace.

On topic, I agree with bace too on this one.  as well as most of the others so far. It really isn't something that I think they should be showing.

Pictures of the dead shouldn't be identifiable, but I think that pictures are needed. I hear all these new reports that all this bad stuff is happening and the news shows these people whose lives are pretty bad shape, but they are alive. It is important that people see the real situation of what is happening, they shouldn't plaster it everywhere, but make it available, or put on the news after you have given people sufficent warning about what they are about to see.

I side with the above opinions. Reality should not be masked.
The images might haunt me if my family is involved. But the said warning should probably be sufficient enough for me to turn the tv off.
Photojournalism will not fullfill its job if its hands are tied.
Images have the power to move mountains. My humble opinion is that that freedom should not be obstructed.

Interesting thread . I hope to see more views on this.

Who is at the wheel here people!!!!!!!!!!!!! We are richocheting through the ether, flying out of control!!!!!!

I agree with Danalec99, freedome of speech or representation should be kept.
There should, of course, be limits to how much gets put on tv and on newspapers etc, but I do not believe that photojuarnalists should stop...however much it may upset people.
Warnings may be a good idea...

I think the FEMA and the other government organizations are hiding behind this.
An agency spokeswoman said space was needed on the rescue boats and that "the recovery of the victims is being treated with dignity and the utmost respect."
When they are under criticism because so many people died, are they going to want pictures of the enormous amount of dead?

I agree with you here danalec... Also if I may add to this... far in the future will the people REALLY know how horrible this was? It's hard for someone to imagine this kind of thing with just numbers. I think that it should be up to the viewer to decide whether they see the watered down photos or the actual gore.

I think I'm sorta mid road on this one...I would never want my family members shown, but from a journalistic perspective you want to shoot shots that tell the story, shots of dead would definitely convey and evoke more emotion...

I agree with those that have said as long as they are not identifiable, but that's a hard to do...but I would lean towards that opinion. Just showing a hand or a foot would speak volumes to me...

Warnings would serve only to guarentee that anyone underaged and underexperienced (read young and impressionable) is going to make every effort possible to see the pictures.

Death is a part of life, but so is sex, and I don't want my daughter seeing porn!!

(Hah, leave it to the Resident Whiner to bring sex into a thread full of dead bodies....  :taped sh: )

Hmmm, I'm not sure if I agree.

Did you see that movie "Signs" w/ mel gibson? That movie was scary right up until the point where they showed us exactly what the aliens looked like. Do you see what I'm driving at?

To show the blunt gore I think cheapens it, and makes it less horrible. You'd become immune to it.

I agree that they need to be shown, but in someway that is not too morbid. Showing this type of news disturbs views. And this is good because an upset public can help encourage things to change hopeful for the better.

Suppress of the press always hide the truth.
