I believe that part of the problem I have is the balance of the image. Here's an edit with the left cropped off and the canvas stretched to put the little roof on the bottom right intersection of the 1/3rd grid. Also enhanced the light rays to form a triangle of focus, and softened the image. Different strokes for different folksView attachment 284211

Yes I see what you are getting at.

My only issue would be the sky. I find it distracts from the focus of the image, which is the wooden structure.

That bothered me as well. I tried cropping it but doing so disrupted the frame balance and without it, there's no context for the light rays. As luminosity creates a focal point for the eye, one possibly solution, would be to raise a point on the structure closer to the same luminosity, and/or burn the sky back.

The nice thing about digital, is images are cheap, moving and taking shots from different perspectives gives you multiple chances at getting the perfect framing.

As noted before, I very much like your inquisitive exploration.

We live and learn. Luckily that lake is not far from me. I will wait for another foggy morning and get closer / further away from the structure with a higher / lower position.
