No. 1 for me, but then I’m a dark kinda guy.
Same here. I prefer a bit of mystery, so #1 shows just enough background detail without it taking over the shot.

I love the shaft of sunlight making the rooftop glow, and the effect is nicely balanced by the handrails on the left side of the frame.

Very nice work, especially considering the color shot you started with. That slice of blue sky needlessly draws the eye, and you were right to crop it out and focus on the elements that matter. Good job!

Thanks all for the comments.
Based on the feedback here is a version with lighter lights and darker darks + that roof dodged and burned.

Comments welcome:

After looking at the original three, and then the fourth one, I like how you addressed the fourth one. A very nice image. #1 and #2 are too dark for me. #3 comes close, but you hit it with the last one. Is that a duck on the roof? Not sure if I like it there or not.

Yes its a duck. I like it so I left it there.

Maybe it does distract from the scene........ I dont know........

Can you make some constructive suggestions?
I did in post #12 above. The OP addressed some of those issues with his edit in post# 22, which IMO is much better.

As to the scene itself, I find it much like a spot I've photographed many times. To my eye it's a great spot, but no matter the angle, perspective, light, I just can't get that to convert to an image. The emotions you feel when looking at a scene are much more complex and varied than a camera can produce, because they're created by your inner memories, and experiences. That's why we use proven graphic design elements to force the viewer's eye to a focal point, and provide surrounding details that convey the emotion the photographer is trying to evoke in the viewer.

Personally, I prefer the first image. The bright roof contrasts nicely against the darker background.

Please feel free to have a go yourself.
I believe that part of the problem I have is the balance of the image. Here's an edit with the left cropped off and the canvas stretched to put the little roof on the bottom right intersection of the 1/3rd grid. Also enhanced the light rays to form a triangle of focus, and softened the image. Different strokes for different folks

I like #2 but I do not do much post processing. Exposing for the shadows but a bit underexposed. Nice mood.
This is a bit of an experiment. I did a lot of work to bring out the contrast without losing the detail in the background trees.

Thanks for the i9nput.
