Hi Guys,

Three more:

Thoughts?

#1 is the best of the three by far, with good shadowing and detail on the face.

My main fault with the bottom two is the lighting, having the side of the subject facing you in shadow just isn't too appealing for birds. Better to have some nice dynamic lighting across the face and chest feathers to really bring out the details, maybe even get some on the eyes.

But that ugly goose with the heart-shaped nostril, laughing at you (or so it seems), mocking you, telling you, you cannot really take a good photo of her (him) (<- well, that's my interpretation of the photo ;)) is funny to look at. And you don't see a bird's tongue too often - well, I don't. So that gives the third photo some appeal, too.
Though, of course, I do see where the problems with the light are.

Bottom photo: Aaaaaaffllaaac!

I agree with the lighting on 2 and 3. I did see it with the third shot and thought I would try to brighten it some in post. I like that his mouth was so wide open. As I waled towrd it, he did it more and more.

I'm at least that glad that while I was shooting these, I did realize the lighting problem and moved around to get that light on their faces. The result of that is the first shot.

Thanks!

Best thing to do, and something a lot of people tend to forget. When I'm going on trails, I usually take a second to see where the sun is, and always walk with it at my back, so for the most part you never have to think about funky lighting.

Picture 1 is just super. Great composition, great lighting, and one colorful duck all ad up to a great picture. Togalive pretty much nailed it for pics 2 & 3.
