I think I got this one where I want it for the most part.. What do you guys think?

Just seems like an odd place to shoot a dancer.

No meaning.. Moms choice. Gave it an urban feeling IMO.

I think Mom is going to regret that in about 10 years when "ghetto chic" is no longer in fashion. I agree; the pose & lighting are fine, but I really hope that you recommended an alternate background as well.

I didn't.. It was what she wanted when she came to me.. Plus this wasn't a once in a lifetime shoot or anything.. Mostly just practice for me. I honestly kind of liked the background lol

I don't know how that all started, but it was probably someone trying to "make a statement" by posing a model in high-class costume in a totally unexpected location, the meaning of which has never registered with me at all.

Meanwhile, millions of moms and wanna-be glamor starlets desire the same raunchy background in a misguided attempt to make their own spot of glamor show up better. Maybe it worked the first time, like when the Dallas Cowboys first dumped the Gatorade onto coach Tom Landry, but the subsequent dumpings mean absolutely nothing, and have been trite ever since.

So as photographers, how much social guidance should we offer? I say we should do whatever we can to make the best photography we can, and sometimes that means making suggestions to the client. Pissed off now, forever grateful later.

Well, since nearly everything would be better, just about anywhere that isn't a garbage dump or an inner-city back alley.

Personally, I think you could have had a lot of fun with this. If there was only to be one image, than I would likely have gone for something soft and unrecognizable; a portrait background or a dance studio, BUT if there was time, I can see a whole series of images. In a playground, in a school hallway, in a department store... basically a bunch of "why is there a girl in a dance costume here???" images. I get that that is what you have captured, but I just find the back alley/brick wall very, very over-done, and totally inappropriate for such a young girl.

NEVER be afraid to recommend ideas to a client. If they don't accept them, that's fine, but at least you've tried.

You did a good job.
If I was shooting this photo, I would have moved her 10-12 feet from the wall, and shot it with a tighter frame at around 70mm(ish) set at f8. It would be a nice DOF on the subject, and good bokeh on the brick.

I see what you mean.. Maybe we'll do another one soon after I get familiar with the town. (Just moved here recently). I didn't put a lot of thought into this since the mom said she wanted pics in this cool alley in town lol. But I'll recommend another shoot in another location. At least she's more than happy with what I have so far lol
