Tips on photographing indoors *birth photography"

I am shooting a friends home birth coming up in March. I am looking forward to exploring in birth photography. I will be shooting indoors and could be day or night (obviously we can plan >.<) Any tips on getting a good lighting set-up? It has to be gentle on the mom and not bother her, and be decent lighting for me. Any good DIY setups or is it worth it to buy some lights?
