What you do really does kinda go with the occasion.
If your relationship is new, I like the idea of the "special" piece of jewelry from the antique or estate type store (something different she won't see elsewhere). Nothing says you're special than one of those eternity pieces from any store USA that ALL your friends already have. If your relationship is more established, the meaning will come more from the thinking behind it, not the actual gift. For example: Honey, pick a place you'd like to go for the weekend, call and make reservations, pack your bag, find a sitter and just let me know when we're leaving. Versus: Honey, my mom is taking the kids this weekend (and she is coming to pick them up so you don't have to take them over), I put a bag on the bed, put what you need in it for 2 days, I'll have the car started and ready for you at xxpm. Like OMG, I didn't have to make the plans/arrangements. I so LOVE you. Trust me on this one. Doesn't mean on the BIG anniversarys, a ring at the bottom of the champagne glass wouldn't have its place. (Don't forget to take your credit card, reservation confirmation and fill the car with gas). You don't want to blow it once you've gotten that far.
