Hey there. I am looking to upgrade my infrared Nikon D60 to something that will shoot video. That being said, as a photographer, of course I'm looking for the best image quality for my money as well. Almost contrary to that statement, I'm looking into the D3100 for the DSLR upgrade route. I understand the D3200 was just released, but I'm REALLY hoping to keep the cost under $500, used. No lenses or accessories needed.

So, if you were to recommend a mirrorless camera to fit the bill, what would you choose? Are there any that would be a better alternative than the D3100, considering I will be using Nikkor lenses?

Your Nikon F-mount lenses won't mount on Nikon's mirrorless cameras, let alone any other mirrorless camera makers cameras.

I love my D3100 and its been great for helping me learn. But if you are already experienced you may find it lacking. It doesn't have a focus motor, considering you have lenses already this is a potential annoyance. If all your lenses have motors in them, then its not a problem.

Its also missing other really nice features like bracketing and IR for remote for example.

The camera itself I love and dont regret getting it at all. For its price bracket I dont think you can get any better.

There's some pretty darn good reviews on the Panasonic Lumix GH2. Not sure about adapters.

I think for video, the SLTs really are a good idea.

But one great ting about mirrorless options, is the short film to flange distance, which opens you up to almost any lens.

Micro 4/3 are somewhat compatable with 16mm lenses, while APS formats will work well with 35mm lenses without too great a conversion factor. I myself am going to be getting an NEX 7 or GXR A12 someday for this technical advantage.

The new Nikon mirrorless camera has a tiny sensor in it and was a big let down for a lot of people. The M43 cameras or the Sony Nex series would be much better cameras.

I shoot with Oly PENs. The E-P3 that I have has been an awesome camera after getting some additional lenses, but the biggest thing I'm not fond of is the lack of viewfinder. Except when you're getting up to those prices, you can easily pick up another Nikon DSLR that shoots video. It's not really worth it unless you really want to camera because of the size.
