What's new

To attempt or not to attempt that is the question

Give it a shot.. what can it hurt?

If it doesn't go over well, drop it. About the sleeve question... don't charge per tat, charge per print. If they want a full body shot, that's one print. If they want a closeup print of a specific tat, that's another, if they want a full arm shot, that's another.

Okay that makes sense.. and then if there is something someone falls in love with go from there with what I pay at my lab and yadda yadda

The frog is blurry... and that was the artists coloring at fault... the other one was my fault and I knew that before I posted it, but my sister is gone and with the location of my ink I can't shoot them.... as stated about the vignetting is the tattoo artist idea I don't like it either AT ALL I am not a fan of it really in any form. But I figured I would give it a try.

Here's my thing ... tattoos usually don't look that great right when they're completed. Why would I want a picture of my tattoo all puffy/red/possibly bleeding? lol

Maybe photographing the 'experience' of getting the tattoo will be more fun for you and the client.

Sounds to me like he's charging people for the opportunity to fill his portfolio.

The perfect business scam! :D:mrgreen:

How are you getting paid? - I would definately try to get reimbursed for your time in cash. Not trade. Trades are great, but never happen.

Ask me how I know.

I think the vignetting is tacky. I would try to talk him out of it.

From a personal view, any time I want to show off my ink, I just roll up my sleeves, or hike up my pant legs, or .......... well, ............ you get the idea. I've already paid hundreds of dollars getting stuck with a needle for hours on end, I'm not paying someone to take pictures of it.... and if I did, IMHO, for $25 I had better be getting an 8x10.

I would never pay for this service no matter how perfect the photos turned out. But most people are very much unlike me. It could take off like a rocket, and make that tattoo artist thousands of dollars. Maybe even make you a buck or two.

Doubt it though.

I hope I'm wrong.

I frequently am.

Edited to add.........

Maybe photographing the 'experience' of getting the tattoo will be more fun for you and the client.

HUGE +1.

Rather than just photos of the tattoos, make it a portrait shoot about people who have tattoos. You can, of course, get close ups or shots of just the ink...but I'm thinking that the portraits might sell better, and be a cool collection of shots for both you and the artist.

Of course, to pull it off, you should be decently proficient at portrait photography (lighting).

Its not photographing the just complete tattoo's those shiney things would look crappy (I know I have plenty of those snapshots from people wanting to see my fresh ink). It is more of his idea for getting people into his new shop, his clients and potentially new clients as well...

I have spent my fair share on my ink as well. i would be getting the majority of the money from it not him and no trade, if I decide to spend the cash there after good for me to add my bodies gallery... the portrait idea could actually work great. hmm....

Then he should be paying you for the shots, and giving them out as free to the customers.

Which sounds better? or would make you want to go to the place?

Example 1: Come on down to McDonald's and get a double cheeseburger for 4 dollars. And 3 more dollars for a drink/fries.

Example 2: Come on down to McDonald's and get free fries and a drink with your order of a double cheeseburger.

Ya well you tell that to someone who has just built a brand new studio... so are u saying in your opinion just bail before I start?
