took this one tonight .....I like it but it seems like it needs something. What do you think?

If you took it in RAW, try doing an HDR with a single RAW, by taking out 3 JPG's (one under, this one, and one over exposed). It should make the trees pop a little more. Just turn the sliders down to make it look a bit more natural and not so overcooked. Also, place the horizon (water's edge) at the lower third; should help a bit with composition and show more of the sky, which I think is the real subject here. This is just what I would do here (not necesarily what is right).

throw this one away. The sky is lacking color, the trees are too far underexposed, and there is no clear subject. Try to get something in the foreground for large wide open spaces as it helps with the feeling of emptiness.

I agree with most, but you might want to use it for Photoshop practice. It looks like you have a number of sensor boogers - time to break out the blower.

Yes I have lost my cleaning kit. I am getting another one tomorrow.

I will shoot it again when leaves really start changing.
