That's something I dislike about the digital 'awareness'. Take someone's picture..and they want to see it, straight away, on the back of the camera. I can tell it's a nice shot, but they're pulling faces and saying "oh no!..delete it delete it"

Film shooters retain the prerogative.

Tell 'em your monitor is on the fritz.

Kids are even more aware of this. They want to see every photo every time.... one at a time. "Lemme see! lemme see!"

I do a quick edit while I'm shooting. If I'm shooting diving, I may shoot 4-5 frames on one diver, will edit it down to 2 frames and delete the others, always editing inbetween dives. Same with any other sport I shoot, if I have time to edit I will. I don't want to be sitting in front of the computer downloading the card for 10 minutes and then spend another 20 minutes picking through images. If I have a first edit done I know that what I'll be looking at are sharp and the action is good. It's all about speed, the first photos out are usually the first photos into the papers.

far too easy to make a mistake and delete the wrong image. God gave us 16+GB cards for a reason. Memory is basically free its so cheap nowadays.
I import, look on the screen, do a mass delete of all the toss outs, then reformat the card when it goes back in the camera.

This way even if I accidentally delete the one on the computer, i have it on the card until i reformat.

Not to mention, if im chimping its to check something specific. I dont want to spend half the day with my head down trying to decide on a tiny screen whether its a keeper or not. You miss half the stuff you're trying to shoot if its action, or cut down on the time you could actually be shooting.
I'll happily take the 2 seconds in front of a computer in the evening with a beer to decide whether its good or not, not when im trying to actually capture things

I have a specific file on my external hard drive named "SD Card Dump". 99.999% of what I shoot ends up there. Before I reformat a card or do a total wipe-out, I copy everything on the card to there. It may hang around there for a couple years before I get around to finally deleting it.

That has saved my arse more than once.

I just get sick of going through them during editing. The ones where I was testing lighting and getting setup.....drives me nuts...lol

Using a hand held light meter to set exposure before the first click of the shutter will greatly reduce the number of those test shots.

That seems like a good solution. Definitely gonna add it to my workflow.

Basically it comes down to what you are shooting and what your time constrants are(if you have any) I don't re-format the card until I have all the images on the computer and on the portable HD as well. When shooting sports I don't miss action because I'm deleting images, there are always breaks in the action to delete. Like I said before, for my line of work, being able to make quick decisions is key. I can see doing studio, or weddings where keeping thousands of images is important and speed isn't a factor, in these cases I'm not sure how much I would be deleting in the camera either.

Ok. for those that don't delete. Do you use cannon? Ive never picked up a cannon before so i'm not familiar with the system, maybe its harder then just pushing one button on the back to delete the photo?
