To Use RAW or Not

Not true, I am afraid... I don't know about Canons, but I know Nikon's NEF format IS compressed... it is just considered "lossless" compression.

not sure if the NIKON compression is lossless, but in principle lossless compression exists. no problem with that.

You should have free software from your camera manufacturer.

true, the camera manufacturer's software is often not the best workflow-optimised, but regarding image quality it is often excellent

Yeah I bought the canon 30d and it has software but after seeing the demo for the adobe lightroom it looked amazing. just thought i would see if there are any opensource programs that are similar. I am fine with the canon sofware they sent with the camera, I may just purchase that lightroom, looks like a great tool.

so i'm a little confused. If I were to use the software that came with my camera, I would just do the lighting adjustments there, and then convert to JPEG for any additional changes I wanted to make that the supplied software can't offer? I really wish I could view RAW in 7.0
