Toddler, grandpa and phone - a test of the Oly EP-3

I find the bald spot in the upper right hand corner very distracting. I also don't know what your being married 3 times has to do with this post, but I don't find it surprising.

Nice, the EP-3 has caught my eye recently for the exact reason you post about. Seems like a nice cam for doing street photography without spending $8k on a Leica. Even adapts well to M-mount lenses from what I hear. : )

Glad you're enjoying it.

Unfortunately my second wife died after several years of a painful and wasting disease.
Does that explain anything further to you?

Since you really don't care for me or my pictures, my suggestion is that you put me on 'ignore'.

The only real issue I have had is the exposure compensation is not nearly as simple as with the Nikon dedicated wheels. It is easily done with the control dials but requires 3 clicks - and of course, it does not reset after the shot. I am used to changing EC from shot to shot when I am shooting on the street and this just isn't quick and thus feasible.

That being said it does manage to hold highlights very well and by shooting in A preferred mode and letting iso float, the exposures have been fine in the short amount of time I've been using it.

So how's the shutter response? Does it feel dSLR quick?

That was always what bugged me most about little cameras, but things have come a long way I would think.

There are three parts to that.
First, the EVF has a sleep mode and I haven't yet got to find out how to lengthen that time until it dozes, and it takes some measurable time (perhaps .5 second) from shutter touch until it wakes so I have to learn to ping the shutter button as I raise the camera.

Second, the AF, which is signaled by a beep, is surprising quick, faster than some Nikon lenses I've had and not quite as fast at the fastest ones but certainly usable for what I've done so far.

Third, the shutter response after AF is reached is very quick, not instantaneous, but very quick.

Bearing in mind that I have actually shot with this a total of about 90 minutes and fewer exposures, a lot of the issues will resolve as I get accustomed to using it.
I did a side by side with a NexC3 and their standard 16mm mm lens. The digital images were essentially the same with no real choice between them but the handling speed of the EP-3 was markedly better for me.
The EP3 is light and small and can be handheld close and tight against the body for stability.

The difference in size and weight has to be experienced

PS, I got that little lens hood, not because the semi-recessed elements will get too much sun, but because the tiny (37 mm), thin and fragile-seeming lens cap will assuredly get lost or eaten.

Good posts Lew.

WOW--the D700 vs EP-3 side-by-side size comparison is shocking...
...dumb question, I know, but is the finder on the Oly removable? Is there a rear LCD one can use for framing to complete the P&S digicam shooter "look"? Or is that the sole type of viewfinding option?

Derrel,

I have removed this answer because after the way you attacked me personally in another thread, I can't tolerate the idea of having been civil to you and then being repaid by that rant.

Darn it you are all getting these aren't you?

Looks like a great result indeed and great to read another user getting some really positive results with the mirrorless cameras! Out of interest what made you go for the oly over say the panasonic versions? At the moment the only thing of the oly that detracts, in my eye, is the fact that you can't use a hotshoe flash/attachment if you are also using the viewfinder attachment (unlike the panasonics which have a more bridge camera appearance and built in viewfinder).
