I think it would be better with more depth of field.
 
Things I like about the pic:
Monochrome takes color out and accentuates form.
This photo is a really good example of how shallow depth of field can be used. The in-focus part is the meat of the picture, where my eyes want to linger.
The in-focus area is nicely balanced.
My eyes move around a lot when I look at the pic, especially at the in-focus parts.
Good job!
 
I like the triangle and pencil points but the excessive blur around them actually pulls my eyes away from the subject.
 
nice shot... interesting "line" showing the DOF.... cool!
 
I think the DoF is perfect for this shot, along with the choice to go B&W.
 
I as well wish there was a deeper depth of field in this photo.

Yep! Only the sharpest pencils are any use in my Maths classroom! :)
