Stab in the dark... OK...two stabs in the dark..

Isn't that camera self contained when folded? Is that the case for the camera?

And would you use a flash like that for something that looks like it would be a manual shutter?

Of course I know nothing....

the flash is right at that time there would have been either powder or flash paper... You would set the lens then squeeze a air bulb to hold the shutter open while firing the flash power or flash paper.

the paper was later used by bookies to get rid of the evidence of bookmaking during any raids. Kodac didn't care who it sold what to. Pretty much like today.
